so as long as the sun is there we'll have jobs [Music] my name is kevin king and i'm a foreman at empower solar [Music] graduated college with a degree of math and then i actually got into a sales job right after that after my sales job i got to the carpenter union i did a lot of framing a lot of high-rises in the city i've been doing residential work my whole life i heard about solar heard about the future of it i kind of wanted to get out of new york found one very close to me i interviewed and uh they offered me the job and i left the union to come here two years later i'm a foreman [Music] my name is uh paul litkano and i'm a solar analyst with bloomberg nef as of 2020 the u.s had installed the cumulative total of about 92 gigawatts of photovoltaic solar it has grown by about 30 annually between 2012 and 2020. specifically the residential solar industry has grown considerably as well as a foreman you're in charge of everything on the job you have a crew typically three to as many as five guys we get to the job site we get on the roof we scope out the scene measure everything out we install all the solar then we have to do an electrical side of it once we have that conduit we run wires connect those panels to a combiner that combiner brings the solar either into your main service panel and feeds the house or back to the grid it's a lot that goes into doing solar it's kind of like carpentry roofing and electrical all in one i thoroughly do enjoy this you learn a lot you meet new people new homeowners every day you see new locations and at the end of the day you're doing a good thing this is a newer industry so there is a lower paying entry which is pretty difficult it's an industry-wide problem of retention for these workers once you get going a little bit you start learning you become more valuable as an employee solar is a labor intensive industry of the 230 000 workers over 65 percent of these jobs are in installation and development solar paid a median wage of about 24.50 in 2019 which is similar to other clean energy industries such as wind or energy efficiency but it's 25 higher than the u.s median of 19 and 40 cents back in 2019 from my experiences last two years on long island most of the jobs have been residential jobs we're just putting a system on an existing house this is considered a new construction job you're seeing a lot more of these because homeowners feel like if they're going to get a house it's worth the investment to get solar right away as costs come down homeowners are starting to become more interested in being able to generate their own power and save other utility bills we have forecasted that the home soil industry will exceed 550 000 new systems just in one year when a lot of people are home like in the quarantine a lot of people have been doing a lot of work to their homes so solar was definitely a topic on a lot of homeowners lines luckily for our industry it is definitely the future i think that any new construction home that's being built should have a source of renewable energy it's an investment and it pays off [Music] [Music] you ...
