what's up youtube this is LDS reliance well I've gotten an overwhelmingly good response to my last few solar videos both of them mentioned solar roof tiles so I thought why not do another solar roof tile video this one I'm going to explore the pros and cons of solar roof tiles but as usual keep in mind these are just my opinions and you guys are welcome to agree or disagree and leave your comments that's part of the fun of YouTube so here we go let's start with the pros for solar roof tiles number one for me would be aesthetic as I mentioned before roof tiles have been around for decades and they used to be kind of ugly but now with Tesla solar roof tiles and other competitors they're starting to actually look pretty beautiful in my opinion I think most people would agree that they look better than the traditional framed solar panels installed on your roof in fact Tesla and a Dutch company called Zep have both patented designs that actually don't even look like solar at all that you can even distinguish them between normal roof tiles the second Pro for solar roof tiles will be durability solar roof tiles are more durable than asphalt shingles which is what most people use on their roofs in fact they're so strong that some people had some concerns early on that firefighters may have a hard time cutting through them to be able to fight a fire in a home not only are these tiles stronger than normal roof tiles but they're also stronger and more durable than the frame solar panels that you would install on your roof and the third Pro in favour of solar roof tiles is its warranty because solar roof tiles are so durable they're typically warrantied for 30 years that's longer than the typical shingle warranty for normal roof shingles which is 25 years but above and beyond that tesla is actually offering a lifetime warranty on each of its solar tiles that protects against physical damage I've never heard of any kind of lifetime warranty for any other roofing product or any other solar product now let's start with the cons the number one con for me is the price they are very expensive when Tesla debuted their solar roof tiles a few years ago they made early promises that the solar roof tiles would cost about the same as a normal roof would well they promised that before they had even finalized the for their solar roof tiles estimates now are putting their roof tiles as the most expensive solar roof tiles in the industry but whichever brand of solar roof tiler you pick not only is it more expensive than a normal roof but it's also more expensive than a normal solar panel installation on your roof con number two is that solar roof tiles are less efficient than traditional solar panel systems now the efficiency of each solar cell in the solar roof tiles compared to a normal solar panel is about the same however because of the massive number of electrical connections solar roof tiles actually create more heat than traditional solar panels and have a harder time of shedding that heat that's because there isn't a three or four inch gap under the solar tiles like there is under a solar panel installation so this extra heat actually decreases the output of the solar roof tiles and con number three is solar roof tiles are more likely to fail again Solar roof tiles require many more electrical connections and introduced many more points of failure into the system than do a normal solar panel installation not only that but some companies like Sun tech have already had recalls due to fire hazards and defects in their solar roof tiles and as I mentioned in a previous video there are rumors that a Tesla installation went up in flames as well although I can't substantiate those rumours other than a Bloomberg article as with most emerging technologies there's all kinds of questions that we all have about these things how long will they really last what will actually be the real-world cost of these things but if companies like Tesla and Sun tegra can get the formula right and keep costs down this could be a game-changer in energy generation thanks for watching my video if you're a big solar fan definitely hit subscribe for more solar content in the future ...
