hi I'm Jeff from solar Choice solar choice is Australia's online comparison service for solar batteries EV charging and heat pumps today we're talking about Trina solar panels I've got a Trina vertex s+ solar panel next to me here um and remember our reviews on solar Choice are independent so we're not tied to any particular manufacturer and in these reviews we're can really say whatever we want so let's talk a little bit about Trina Trina are one of the well-known names in the Solar industry they've been around since 1997 right before the boom of solar and have really been one of the top five solar panel manufacturers since then so two and a half Decades of of being right at the top in terms of volume and reputation over that time they've generally maintained a really strong message in terms of customer feedback there hasn't been any major complaints around the the trainer brand and they're generally positioned as a cost effective mid-range quality they're not the the premium top ends and they're definitely not the the cheap and nasty option let's talk a little bit about this solar panel that we have here so it's a 440 W solar panel it's got 144 half cut end type solar cells so it uses some of the main solar technology that's used for for high efficiency solar panels in terms of the construction of the panel it is a monofacial panel uh but it uses 1.6 mm of Glass on the front and 1.6 mm of Glass on the back and that's a little bit different to most monofacial panels that will have 3.2 mm on the of Glass on the front with a a plastic backing shees uh and trer have used this construction to to try and reduce micr cracks and increase the durability of the solar panel uh which you'll see when we talk about the warranty period however one downside of this construction is that it is a little bit more susceptible to hail so in the independent testing completed by PV Evolution Labs the B facial solar panels or double glass solar panels like this one were more susceptible to hail so more frequently they broke under the various different testing conditions that they put them through when it comes to the EV Evolution Labs testing however Trina have been named as a top for performer every year since 2014 so that's over a decades or just a decade's worth of really good results in that independent testing they do submit however a lot of different models into that testing and this year they they had some of their bifacial solar panels named as a top performa in all seven of seven testing categories however this particular panel um only tested as a top perform in one of seven uh testing categories that was for the light induced degradation test which basically puts the panel through an accelerated lifetime to see how quickly it's going to lose its capacity over time so good to see that this this solar panel performed well in that category this solar panel is rated at 22% uh in terms of its maximum efficiency rating and that sort of Compares pretty well to the other coste effective solar panels on the market uh again it's not topof the line but it's it's a decent solid performance and you know when we say the top of the L they're they're really about that 23% Mark so it's very close so let's talk about Trina's warranty offer on this particular panel which is designed for residential consumers it has a 25-year product warranty and a 30-year performance warranty so the product warranty is the important one that's one that covers manufacturing defects and it's the one that we see claims More Often by consumers so good to see that Trina has got a 25e product warranty there that matches what we're we're now starting to expect from the the solar panel Market it was only 3 or 4 years ago where when we were seeing most panels with a 10 or 12E product warranty so it's it's quite impressive to see you know how the durability of these panels has improved even in the last 2 or 3 years and if we look at at that performance warranty it's a 30-year warranty so typically we're seeing a 25e performance warranty so Trina really stepped up the the game with this panel and that partly comes to that glass on glass construction and the degradation rate is guaranteed to be no more than 0.4% per year after the first year so that leads to at the end of 25 years the maximum degradation being 9 2% and dropping down to 87.4% after 30 years so that's a pretty good performance warranty it's a little bit harder to claim but definitely suggest that this panel is going to perform pretty well throughout the next three decades so let's cover off some pros and cons of this Trina solar panel the pros kind of come back to Trina as a company there's really very few brand names in Australia that that have that long track record of performing well over 25 years and and Trina are really one of those Mainstay brands of the solar Market they have a local office here set up in Australia to support um technical issues warranty claims sales support so they're really well backed domestically here in Australia and if we look at this panel it's a pretty good value panel in terms of the techn technical performance the data sheet marries up pretty well against most other solar panels and and it's coming in at a at a cost effective price finally one pro that we call out with this solar panel is it has been rated fairly well by solar Choice customers so 125 customers have scored this an average of 4.8 stars out of five so that's a a really good score to maintain over a long time with a a lot of customers now if we consider some of the cons of this Trina solar panel partly I I believe it comes down to that construction so you've got 1.6 mm of Glass on each side of the solar cells making it a little more susceptible to to hail now if your solar panel is broken by hail it might be covered under your insurance but but not always so if you are in a hail prone area it may be worth looking at some of their other options or other brands that have that 3.2 mm front sheet another con that I'll call out is that this panel isn't one of their best performing in the PV Evolution Labs testing so it only performed well in one of seven categories but they have some other models that performed up to called out as top performers in seven out of seven of those testing categories those were mostly some of Trina's bif facial solar panel so if that's important to you I would encourage you to look at some of the other models that that trainer has on the market so that's all we've got to talk about today with this trainer solar panel hopefully it was helpful and helped you learn a bit more about who trer are and some of the pros and cons of this panel as always you can come to the solar Choice website where you can read through a full written review of this panel and every other solar panel that's on this on the market and along with a number of other video reviews on our YouTube channel as always you can check out
